Modern niobium microalloyed steels and weldability

The principal purpose of this short document is to provide the reader with basic information about the concept of weldability, and its importance to the fabrication industry.

Whilst much of the content is general in nature the following information focuses on the fabrication of steels containing niobium. Niobium is added during the steelmaking process as a ferroniobium addition and its presence in steels, at very modest levels, significantly increases both strength and toughness, bringing benefits in a range of sector applications worldwide. Welding is, inevitably, an essential feature of the manufacture and use of virtually all steel products.
